With the increasing incorporation of Surround Sound in the domestic environment, it seems reasonable to revisit the (abortive) quadraphonic era of music reproduction. This paper describes a left-right symmetric decode-only playback system which substantially improves a stereo image by use of two rear channels. An actively controlled matrix has been developed which utilizes steering vectors which are close to those prominent in psychoacoustic aural image detection. The system has been implemented at an analog board level, and a DSP implementation is currently in progress.
