At first glance, specifying and designing a Peak Program Meter for digital audio seems an easy task, especially for someone who is familiar with the design of analog PPMs. However, a whole new set of problems soon arise. Should a new scale or a numeric display, unfamiliar to the user, be introduced? What does oversampling and digital filtering have to do with Peak Level Monitoring of digital audio? What is the nominal level (or Permitted Maximum Level) in digital audio?
