Program Loudness Metering and Control

Document Thumbnail

The development of a program meter drive circuit is described, enabling program monitoring in terms of sensory loudness, rather than engineering units. Subjective tests were carried out in order to assess typical viewers' ratios of sensory to perceived loudness. Then a second set of tests was made to study the response of this meter against viewers' reactions. Finally, methods of loudness control are described with particular application to an automated television playout center using all-digital audio.
