If electroacoustic means are used to reinforce the direct sound and/or to enhance the later arriving reflections, disturbing side effects may occur such as localization problems and artificial impression of the reverberant field. Wave front systems aim at overcoming those problems by synthesizing wave fronts that closely resemble natural wave fronts (JAES, Vol. 36, 1988). This paper summarizes the underlying principles and discusses how the wave front processor should be designed for sound reinforcement.
