A number of listening experiments have been made to investigate how auditory distance is perceived in different rooms: an anechoic room, an IEC listening room, and a classroom. Loudspeakers were placed in the rooms playing back a voice signal. The results show that in normal rooms the sound is perceived at about the same distance as the physical distance, regardless of the playback level. In the anechoic room there is no correspondence between physical and perceived distance.
