Panpot Laws for Multispeaker Stereo

Unlike the well accepted constant-power sine/cosine law for two-speaker stereo, there is no well accepted panpot law for frontal stage stereo systems using three or four loudspeakers. Various proposed laws, including that of Bell Telephone Laboratories and one based on perfect reproduction of velocity are considered, and it is shown that optimal stereo imaging is given by a compromise law that is almost independent of the angular width of the speaker layout.
