The audio industry faces a major transformation from analog-based systems to higher order digital systems. Although it appears the industry is struggling in a current state of chaos and uncertainty, this is a necessary part of the transformation process. Part I of this paper examines the classical stages of transformation and relates them to the audio industry's experience. Part II provides a vision of the future, with particular emphasis on the research of the AES Working Group on Sound System Control (WG-10).
