Fifty Years of Sound Reinforcement: Precautions for Sound Field Synthesis

The foremost ingredient is true reproduction of the original sound. Certain features of spectral response and spacial distribution of loudspeakers which are still overlooked are illuminated. The major limitation and threat is feedback. Misuse of microphones is rampant. The basic fallacy of equalization is disclosed. The most neglected potential is true, simple stereophonic reinforcement. Complexity seems to feed upon itself. Success in this field depends not only on competent design, but eventually on competent operation.
