Some of the inner structure of musical patterns is revealed when the musical patterns are given a two-dimensional expression on the fingerboard of a stringed instrument. This unfolding of content is analogous to the analysis of signals for correlation or periodicity. A new type of MIDI controller has been developed to further explore these ideas.
