Analysis of a quantizing system using triangular-pdf dither has proven that the means and variance of the total error are constant and independent of the system input. It has been suggested that, for purposes of real-time moment estimation, the nature of the error in such systems is nevertheless essentially different from that of an independent noise source. This hypothesis is investigated both theoretically and experimentally in this paper, and it is shown that their behaviors are equivalent for purposes of estimating psychoacoustically meaningful statistical quantities.
