Recently developed perceptual coding will play an important role in the future of broadcasting and telecommunications. Among these is the MUSICAM audio coding system, designed by a European team of researchers, within the scope of the EUREKA 147 project, with the aim of being one of the key components of Digital sound broadcasting (DSB) systems. Providing a significant reduction in the bit rate of a high quality digital audio program, this new technique has been selected by the standardization body ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 (Moving Pictures Expert Group, MPEG) as the basis of a three-layer concept, and is now applicable to a wide range of professional and consumer electronics services.
