The fluctuation ambient noise inside car cabins can heavily impair the perception of music and speech because it narrows the utilizable dynamic range. A dynamic range compressor with adaptively adjustable paraments can be used to considerably improve the perception quality. This paper describes the design and DSP implementation of a combined compressor/limiter/: expander/noise gate with variable parameters for car audio applications. Since the application field is highly cost-sensitive, considerable effort was devoted to achieving high code efficiency and a fast through put rate.
