The broadcasting channel toward mobile receivers, especially in dense urban areas, is particularly hostile, making the transmission of high-quality audio programs very challenging.This paper deals with the principles of coded orthogonal frequency division multiplex (COFDM), a promising solution studied at C.C.E.T.T., which is able to cope with such a channel. The Eureka 147 DAB system, based on COFDM, is described, including the matching of COFDM to MUSICAM coding. New network broadcasting possibilities, offered by the COFDM technique, are investigated.
