Limitations imposed by the state of the art, with respect to dynamic range, signal-to-noise, bias noise, modulation noise, and tape motional stability, on the magnetic tape recording of scientific data at USNUSL are discussed. Current methods of coping with these limitations are presented, with results of studies toward improvement.
