As it has already been documented, optimum locations of a loudspeaker may be different when considering lower or higher frequencies. Therefore, using subwoofers, even to support full-range monitoring loudspeaker systems, can be reasonable. Discussed are basic concepts (single subwoofer or pairs, far-field or near-field), design practices, and requirements, using room response inverse filtering, etc. Theoretical considerations are compared with the measurements of, and the first-year experience with, the monitoring system of the new Studio Rudolfinum in Prague.
