The recently developed Layer I and II of the ISO/MPEG-Audio coding standard, which is based on perceptual coding techniques, will play an important role in the future of computer multimedia, broadcasting, and telecommunications. One of the important features is the generic architecture with the possibility to adapt to different applications. Improvements of the audio quality, and addition of new features can be made with such a generic system in a way compatible to the standards.
