Monitor Levels and Quality Evaluation of HDTV 3-1 Multichannel Sound

The HDTV Multichannel Sound Study Group, sponsored by the Hoso Bunka Foundation, has organized approximately 30 members since 1991. To obtain a practical guideline at the multichannel production stage is the group's final goal. This paper describes current activity. Monitor levels of the 3-1 multichannel sound in the HDTV system with display sizes ranging from 30-in to 270-in were investigated. Statistics of monitor levels that the professional studio mixing engineer group judged as optimum were obtained. Relationships between multichannel sound monitor levels and display sizes were clarified. Statics of listening levels of the nonprofessional consumer group were also obtained for the same program. In another experiment, sound quality of the HDTV 3-1 multichannel sound was studied and processed by psychometric methods. Features of the 3-1 multichannel sound were characterized by three-dimensional factors.
