Diffuse reflection, or scattering, is an extremely important phenomenon in room acoustics and has a strong impact both on perceived room acoustical quality and on the applicability of simplified prediction of room acoustic measures, such as reverberation time. The importance of diffuse reflection is manifested in the DISC project, which contributes to the consideration of measurement practices for reflection properties by the AES Standards Committee Working Group SC-4-2. Properties and effects of diffuse reflection, as compared to specular reflection, are discussed. Existing and suggested models for the treatment of diffuse reflection in computerized prediction of architectural acoustics are evaluated, in particular, in relation to their feasibility for auralization.
