On Transaural Stereo for Auralization

Reported are improvements on the authors' original work in transaural production, including IIR filter design, critical-band smoothing, and a simple modification to the method of images for efficient directionalization of reflections. Experiences with an inexpensive DSP board in a desktop computer are described. Included are comments on the aspects of transaural stereo which affect auralization, such as the number and placement of loudspeakers, which were addressed in the generalized transaural theory. New thoughts on standardization and a caveat about perceptual encoders are included.
