An extension of the MUSICAM audio coding technique at a reduced sampling frequency is proposed as a solution to intermediate quality coding for news gathering and multimedia applications at bit rates in the range of 32 to 64 kbit/s per channel. The proposed scheme, which is compatible with the ISO International Standard -MPEG 1 Audio,- compares favorably with other coding schemes, such as CCITT G-722 at the target bit rates.
