A model of the human ear has been developed in order to be used in perceptual coding of audio signals. As it predicts well-known experimental results, it is further used as an artificial ear in various experiments on masking phenomena. Applications of this model to objective perceptual measurement techniques and to improve the efficiency of a MUSICAM codec (ISO/MPEG1 audio) are discussed.
