Acoustical Design of a Surround-Sound Postproduction Studio for HDTV

Document Thumbnail

The HDTV Multichannel Sound Study Group, under the sponsorship of the Hoso Bunka Foundation, has organized approximately 30 members since 1991. The groups's final goal is to obtain a practical guideline at the multichannel sound production stage. This paper describes current activity in this regard. NHK has constructed a sound postproduction studio for HDTV. It was designed for use with 4-channel (3-1) sound reproduction. The control room has a length of 9.0 m, a width of 7.3 m, and a height of 3.2 to 3.6 m with a reverberation time of : about 0.25 s. The front walls and ceiling of the room are absorbent and the rear is diffusely reflective. Some sound traps and sound diffusors were used to complete the acoustic design. A 160-in sound screen (patent pending) on the front wall enables installation of the central loudspeaker behind the screen at the same height as the left and right loudspeakers on either side. Two large and five small loudspeakers for the surround soundfield were installed in the side and rear walls.
