Since the value of an audio sample is dependent upon the value of its neighbors, the reduction of redundancy in audio signals is achieved by the use of a predictive coding technique. After reviewing several prediction coding methods, a multistage approach, optimized for the requirements of a real-time implementation, is presented. A short review of the entropy computation is given as an introduction. Resulting charts are given to illustrate the compression ratios obtained in comparison with the entropy of the computed signals.
