ISO-MPEG-2 aims at the definition of a generic audio-visual standard with application to digital TV, digital storage, and telecommunications. The audio part of this standard is mainly characterized by a multichannel presentation concept to provide more realistic audio-visual programs. This paper presents a real-time MPEG-2 decoder working at bit rates of up to 384 kbit/s for up to five channels.
