Modeling a Cognitive Aspect in the Measurement of the Quality of Music Codecs

Document Thumbnail

Measurement of music codec quality requires correct modeling of the masking behavior at and above masked threshold. A method is discussed that performs this modeling. It is shown that an asymmetry exists in the subjectively perceived distortion between audible components introduced by the codec versus audible components left out by the codec (e.g., bandwidth limiting). Incorporating this asymmetry in the model improves the prediction of the subjectively perceived quality.
