This paper is the first approach in developing a generic perceptual model able to hold all the different psychoacoustic models proposed in perceptual coding and objective perceptual assessment research, in order to provide a useful theoretical environment for both psychoacoustic researchers and audio engineers. Some general theoretical definitions are proposed, trying to integrate the most accepted conventions in the existing literature, and other notation is introduced. The relation of this global model to other simplified models used either for perceptual coding or objective perceptual assessment is stated. A simplified model is proposed and discussed.
