The idea of using dither and noise shaping in connection with A/D conversion or with word-length truncation has been discussed in a number of noteworthy papers, especially by S. Lipshitz, J. Vanderkooy, and R. Wannamaker. The paper discusses the applications of the psychoacoustically optimized noise shaper designs. For situations where these methods can not be applied, due to the larger dynamic range needed, a modified design strategy is proposed, which includes adaption to the incoming word length. Practical implementations are compared. In addition, aspects are discussed concerning dither algorithms for signals to be mixed, such as a digital multitrack recorder on in a digital mixing console.
