Conventional super-directional microphones have some problems, including directionality changes with frequency, the cut-off characteristics are not so sharp, and variable directional control is difficult. The authors have developed a super-directional array microphone using a two-dimensional digital filter. Although this microphone has sharp cut-off characteristics, the sound receiving area is uniform over a wide-frequency range, and the directionality is controllable with the sampling frequency. This paper describes the configuration and the principle of this microphone and the performance and the features of the new super-directional microphone.
