Multirate filters use decimation and interpolation to give improved efficiency over conventional FIR structures. The design of optimal multirate filters using the least- mean-square (LMS) algorithm is presented. Both linear-phase and minimum-phase structures are possible and for each a generalized filter topology is developed, suitable for broad-band equalization applications. Trade-offs between filter complexity, target approximation accuracy, and signal distortion are also investigated.
