A new BiCMOS audio attenuator controlled by a 16-bit three-wire serial interface, achieves a dynamic range of 120 dB and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.0008%. The circuit uses a resistor ladder structure to create a 76-dB attenuation range and a 104-dB mute level. Various techniques are applied to achieve noiseless attenuation changes and to minimize distortion sources.
