Development of the tape cartridge is traced to the present state of the art, e.g., continuous loop, floating hub, thin tape and special head configurations. Cartridges for testing and training, 1/2" wide tape for digital and analog storage, etc., are also described. Tape life, backing lubricants, loading methods, maximum feasible lengths, and flutter/wow are discussed along with the future of the cartridge concept in home and industry.
