SPiKe- Protection Safeguards Monolithic IC and Output Power Discretes

Document Thumbnail

A revolutionary circuit design concept, patented by R. J. Widlar, maximizes output power of monolithic audio power ICs while protecting against Safe Operating Area violations. Conventional ICs and hybrid modules fall short of providing this level of protection while maintaining high-output current drive capability. This paper discusses the advantages of the SPiKe- (Self Peak Instantaneous (YKe) temperature) protection and how it maximizes the IC's output power capability according to its operating conditions while providing protection. In addition, circuit topologies of obtaining higher output powers are shown, maintaining the reliability of the IC through SpiKe- protection.
