The manner in which modern microphone and telephone receivers, as currently used in hearing aids, have evolved from early telephone receivers is described. The occluded volume of a typical unit is less than one-quarter inch cube. The manner by which a reasonably flat response is secured from variable-reluctance microphones is shown by their equivalent circuit. Illustrative data is given on typical microphones and receivers.
