A Transform Coding Algorithm based on the Discrete Fourier Transform has been developed to reduce the bit-rate of high-quality audio signals (CD) without audible degradation. The result is a reduction factor of about five for usual sound signals. For implementation a real-time hardware consisting of two fixed-point digital signal processors was built. This hardware concept delivers high flexibility for further algorithm development and compactness at low costs.
