For the "Landesministerium für Umwelt, Raumordnung and Landwirtschaft" of the Nordrhein-Westfalen a research project has been carried out concerning optimizing speech intelligibility and reducing environmental noise caused by sound systems in sports stadiums. A detailed analysis of eight stadiums (involving Delay Spectrometry and subjective ALC tests) shows a generally poor sound system performance, when checked against the maximum attainable speech intelligibility under the given circumstances, i.e. acoustics and crowd noise. Recommendations for improvement are given.
