The bit-detection in CDs can be done digitally. The reasons for doing so are two fold. First, future CD players should play ill treated CDs properly. Second, a digital solution makes life easier for the set maker, as an integrated digital circuit maintains its accuracy and the number of components can be reduced. This presentation deals with the PLL, being a crucial device in the clock regeneration and bit detection. The PLL operates completely in the discrete time domain. A solution is presented for accurate phase detection from the digital signals.
