Signal Processing Unit for Digital Mastering

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes the development of a professional type digital audio signal processing unit, which provides digital equalization, filtering, and dynamics controlling functions in the pure digital domain. In conventional digital parametric equalizers using Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) digital filters, variations in amplitude have inevitably caused nonlinear phase response. Applying Finite Impulse Response (FIR) digital filters, we have developed a linear phase parametric equalizer in this unit. The linear phase equalization will have a great impact for sound signal processing in digital mastering. Dynamics controlling functions such as limiting, compressing, noise gating, and level control are also important signal processing functions in digital mastering, so these functions are also mounted in this unit. To make this unit suitable for practical use, a specially designed Digital Audio Signal Processor (DASP) for digital audio signals only has been developed.
