Automatic microphone mixers have become common in unattended sound reinforcement systems. Though many of these use simple gating, superior continuous analog functions exist. A brief review of the field of automatic mixer functions is given. A prototype of an eight-channel controller for use in console insert points has been built. It provides automatic mixing functions as an aid to mixers of multi-mike live sound. Ambient noise and reverberation pickup are reduced. Mixer reaction time is eliminated in fast-moving discussions. A videotape of on-air tests with news and panel discussion programs shows the level of performance achieved.
