Stereosurround-A Compatible Multichannel Encoding/Decoding Process for Audio and Audio/Video Applications

Document Thumbnail

The evolution of two-speaker stereo sound reproduction from single-speaker monaural was a tremendous step forward in the creation of more realistic sound fields for audio and audio/video productions. Two reproduction channels, however, present severe restrictions to sound field generation as far as forming stable images over a wide listening area, and the creation of unambiguous ambience and rear images are concerned. These limitations have been successfully overcome by the motion picture industry using three reproductions in front of the listener and one to the sides or rear. The Stereosurround process is a practical, compatible 4-2-4 matrix encode/decode production format derived from motion picture audio techniques that allows the generation of more realistic sound fields using four discrete-like reproduction channels. The theoretical and practical aspect of this process are discussed, as well as a number of typical applications.
