Design Considerations for an Accelerometer-Based Dynamic Loudspeaker Motional Feedback System

A 15-inch dynamic loudspeaker employing a peak 30 dB of accelerometer-based negative feedback shows a reduction in harmonic and intermodulation distortion by a factor of 10 over conventional designs. It is argued that distortion, rather than frequency response, is responsible for the subjective qualities of bass "muddiness" or "overhang" that degrade reproduced music. Engineering tradeoffs that influence the design of such servo loudspeaker systems are discussed.
