A New Playback Head Azimuth Test

The azimuth alignment of the playback head is based on the respective section of a calibrating tape. Either by deadjustment and subsequent adjustment to maximum output or best phase correlation of two channels a proper alignment of the replayhead can be derived. The new method supplies a value on the level meter of one channel which clearly shows whether a readjustment is necessary. For this purpose by using a special head a new test tape is made and commercially available. Basically this new recording consists out of two auxiliary tracks located within one standardized track. One track is recorded with a high frequency with fixed phase, the other with the same frequency alternating between leading and trailing phase of a fixed value. A deviation of head azimuth either increases or decreases the phase shift resulting in different level reductions. This special recording is part of a new test tape which has been designed in cooperation with the Institut für Rundfunktechnik for the ARD and ZDF operations.
