Further Developments of Loudspeaker Stereophony

Document Thumbnail

The requirements for sound systems to accompany HDTV need to be taken as guidelines for the further development of stereophony in a general context, giving consideration to high-quality sound presentation without any picture. It is stated to be the goal to overcome the basic shortcomings of conventional two-loudspeaker stereophony so as to generate a natural perception of spatial impression and, at the same time, to enhance the width of the listening area. A hierarchy of loudspeaker arrangements is proposed permitting graded performance in a compatible way. The maximum performance levels of future sound transmission standards should be determined on this basis, considering different requirements and constraints of individual systems (MUSE, HD-MAC, Wideband HDTV).
