The major challenges for the successful implementation of 3-D audio systems involve minimization of front-back reversals, intracranially heard sound, and localization blur for listeners. Designers of 3-D audio systems are faced with additional challenges in data reduction and low frequency response characteristics. The relationship of the Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to these challenges is shown, along with some preliminary psychoacoustic results gathered at NASA-Ames.
