A procedure is given for designing stable sigma-delta modulators with high-order discrete-time loop filters. An unusual loop topology with distributed feedback from the quantizer output to intermediate nodes in the loop filter is described and compared to more conventional loops. The concept of signal-dependant quantizer gain is explored and several nonlinear stabilization strategies are presented to insure unconditional stability. Design examples for both A/D and D/A loops are given.
