Normal Modes of Some Common Thin Metal Diaphragms

Document Thumbnail

Finite element analysis (FEA) data is presented concerning the structural behavior of several common sound radiating surfaces and some not so common ones. Natural frequencies and modeshapes of various geometries of metal diaphragms are compared. Among these are a flat circular plate, a spherical segment, a hemispheroid and an ellipsoid. Additionally, data is presented which shows the effect of the surround as an edge constraint. Even though driving force and damping are not considered, there is still much to be learned from a diaphragm's normal modes.
