Measured loudspeaker responses fall rapidly below about 40 Hz, and acoustic noise from ventilation systems or environmental factors will cause errors in the measurement where the response is low. Spectra of the acoustic noise in our laboratory are presented, and the implications on acoustic transducer measurements are discussed. A microphone capable of response to dc is used to measure the pressure fluctuations to very low frequencies, even barometric changes due to weather. Most of the acoustic noise appears to be due to ventilation systems, and noise power spectra generally vary as 1/f squared at low frequencies.
