Many methods exist for characterizing nonlinearities in digital systems including harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion and level linearity. These techniques, while useful for engineering purposes, are not based on psychoacoustic principles and do not predict the audible performance of the equipment. The noise modulation technique offers an alternative which is modeled on the human hearing process and provides good correlation with subjective measurements. Results on typical equipment will be compared with those obtained using conventional techniques.
