Correction of Focalization Phenomena of the Opéra Comique Coupola

Document Thumbnail

The concave ceiling of the Opéra-Comique (also called Salle Favart) in Paris, is typical of many 19th century theaters. It results in a strong focalization above the audience, mostly at the balcony. The phenomenon has been analyzed using a TDS technique and has been modelled with the 'SoundBase' hall simulation computer programme, a convex transparent element, which would not hide the Benjamin Constant classified painting. The effect of this acoustic 'lentil' is to diffuse the impinging sound and, thus, to reduce the focalization effect. The results of the modelization and of the objective measurements are presented.
