Possible Mechanism for Explaining Monaural Phase Effects of Complex Tones

Document Thumbnail

In this investigation it has been shown that monaural phase effects can be explained on the basis of interaction between various aural distortion products with the signal components. There is evidence that only different tones have influence on phase detection for multicomponent signals. According to the present model changing the phase of the even components by 90° will give the most significant effect, thus corroborating the results from various experiments. The model also explains the difference in phase audibility between various signals, why phase effects can be heard with loudspeakers in anechoic rooms and, why an inversion of some signals can be heard.
