Additive Synthesis and Resynthesis: Facts and Realities

Document Thumbnail

This paper proposes a tentative objective evaluation of additive synthesis and resynthesis, with the light of hands-on experience on the FDSS Studio, and additive synthesizer and resynthesizer. First, an introduction presents and explains either the strong interest or skepticism amongst the musical audio community about additive synthesis. Then, a description of the main FDSS Studio features is given. Subesequently, considerations on the qualities and drawbacks of additive synthesis are presented, with audio examples and descriptions of software tools available on the FDSS Studio to circumvent these drawbacks. Finally, a description of a new sound modelling tool, an interesting solution to the data problem with additive synthesis that allows to blend sections of timbres with each other by interpolation, is given. A presentation of future development for the FDSS Studio, including real-time interpolation, concludes the paper.
